Conservation Authorities

The Ganaraska Authority’s area of responsibility covers the watersheds in the west part of Northumberland County, and includes the Ganaraska Forest. Its web-site has information on the Forest, on its Consevation Areas, and on its program and services.

Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority

The Lower Trent Authority’s area of responsibility covers the watersheds the east part of Northumberland County. Its web-site has information on its Consevation Areas, and its program and services.

Nature Clubs

Willow Beach Field Naturalists, based in Cobourg and Port Hope, is the only nature club serving Northumberland County. It is dedicated to preserving the natural heritage of the County, publishes a Newsletter, The Curlew, eight times a year, and has a program of monthly meetings and regular field trips. Information on these, and on its other activities and programs is available on its site.

Adjacent Nature Clubs: the clubs in adjacent Counties have broadly similar objectives and programs to Willow Beach.

Land Conservation

The Nature Conservancy works to protect biodiversity through the purchase, donation of, or placing conservation easements on, ecologically significant lands. It has made important acquisitions on the Rice Lake Plains, and continues to be very active in the County.

Nature Conservancy of Canada

The Northumberland Land Trust also works to preserve the natural, historical and cultural heritage of the County, by establishing, maintaining and managing protected areas.
